Wisdom at Work

Josh Wanner40DOW

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion…. Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.”

Proverbs 8:12, 18

When I was growing up, our pianist at church would let me sit next to her and turn pages for her during the service. One particular Sunday sticks out to me. The sermon was on contentment and my dad (the pastor) said from the pulpit, “It isn’t abundance that brings us true joy. Being super rich never actually made anyone happy”. The pianist leaned over to me and whispered, “That might be true, but I’d like to give it a try.”

Now that I’m responsible for my own bills, I can all too often relate to the sentiment. I find myself longing for an abundance of earthly goods. I want enough money that I don’t have to look at price tags or check my budget before I go out to eat. I want an abundance of space in my house to fill with an abundance of stuff. More never seems enough.

But God’s promise of riches and wealth is not the promise of earthly abundance we often long for. It’s so much more than that. It’s a promise of abundant wisdom found in His Word. It’s a promise of abundant love found in His Church. It’s a promise of abundant grace found through His Son. And that is more than enough.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, my sinful heart often longs for an abundance of things. Help me today to focus instead on what truly is abundant – Your love.
