My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Proverbs 3:1-2
Almost every day after work, I call my best friends. The conversation always starts the same, “How was your day?” There are really three main answers to this question: good, small bad, or big bad.
A good day is self-explanatory, but small bad and big bad may be new terminology for you. A big bad day is when something really went wrong. Big bad day explanations are typically interspersed with sobs.
Small bad days are a little more common. They’re the days where enough little things go wrong to move the day out of the good category. A small bad day could be a day where I ran out of coffee, a day where I hit every red light on the way to work, a day where I ran out of patience with people, or a day where people ran out of patience with me. Not enough to sob – most of the time – but certainly enough to feel like the day was indeed bad, even if it was small bad.
If I’m being honest, it takes a lot of things going right for me to call a day good, but very few things going wrong for me to call it bad. Scripture talks a lot about the way of peace, but I very rarely end a day feeling peaceful.
If this sounds familiar to you, I have good news: peace is not a feeling, it’s a person. Every time we hear God’s Word we are given peace, because God’s Word always points us to Jesus. Every time we pray we are given peace, because prayer connects us with Jesus. Every time we worship we are given peace, because worship delivers the grace of Jesus. Peace isn’t dependent on whether we feel peaceful, friends. Peace is knowing Christ is with us in the good days, the small bad days, and yes, even the big bad days. Go in peace, and with Christ, today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, remind me today and every day that peace is not dependent on my plans – but that peace is all about Your presence, which is always good.
