It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (NIV)
Wisdom may not be valued much in our society these days. You rarely, if ever, hear someone admiringly say, “There goes a wise person”.
What do we think of when we speak of wisdom? Is it just know-ledge, insight and good sense, as Webster describes it? According to the verses above in 1 Corinthians, it encapsulates much more than Webster had in mind. It is the very heart of redemption, which comes only by the gift of God through the Holy Spirit and includes righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Being knowledgeable and having insight and good sense are good things. They certainly help us manage our lives in this world better. But to have righteousness, holiness and redemption is far greater. It is eternal – not just for life in this world, but for a life in eternity which brings us right into the presence of God.
Wisdom is not acquired by our own effort. We can, and should, study Scriptures and learn as much about God as we can. But only God is the giver of the true wisdom described above. He is the one who makes it all possible.
If we open ourselves to His workings within us, we can obtain the things we need most – for this life and for eternity.
Prayer
Dear Father, thank You that Your Holy Spirit gives us righteousness, holiness, and redemption through Christ Jesus our Savior. Open our hearts to believe and receive what You most want to give us – eternal life with You.
