Resting

Josh Wanner40DOD

The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

– Luke 23:55-56

The actions of the women who followed Jesus from Galilee can be seen as fulfilling Jesus’ teachings in several ways. Their devotion and care for Jesus’ body after His crucifixion showed the love, service, and faithfulness that Jesus emphasized throughout His ministry.

  1. Love and Service: Jesus taught the importance of loving and serving others. The women’s preparation of spices and perfumes for Jesus’ body is an act of love and service, demonstrating their deep affection and respect for Him even after His death. This aligns with Jesus’ teaching to love one’s neighbor and to serve others selflessly.
  2. Faithfulness and Obedience: By observing the Sabbath rest before returning to the tomb, the women showed their faithfulness to Jewish law and customs. This adherence to the commandments, even in their grief, reflects the obedience to God’s command that Jesus often highlighted as essential for His followers.
  3. Commitment to Jesus’ Mission: By caring for His body, the women also demonstrated their commitment to Jesus’ mission and message. They participated in the broader narrative of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, which was central to his teachings about the Kingdom of God and redemption.

May we all honor the life and teaching of our Lord Jesus, giving thanks for His sacrifice on the cross in all we do.

Prayer:

Father, teach us to love and serve in faithful obedience to You. Give us all strength to commit to Jesus’ mission.
