John 3:1-8
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
In John chapter 3, Nicodemus had come to Jesus in the middle of the night, fearing being seen in the company of the Messiah, yet wanting to hear more. However, Jesus’ words to the Pharisee Nicodemus are perplexing. Just how can a person be born again? The very thought is unbelievable.
Jesus clearly explained the meaning of being born again. Only those born of water (baptism) and (Holy) Spirit would be able to experience God’s kingdom.
Jesus looks at fallen mankind with wondrous eyes that save. He saves us from the blight of sin and death, saves us from the fallen state we inherit from Adam. Through our baptism by water, we are graced with the Holy Spirit, who saves us from ourselves. And through being born again we experience God’s kingdom even now.
On the Last Day, we will see with our own eyes the face of God and will be able to experience Jesus’ warm loving eyes that save.
Dear Lord Jesus, help me to see with eyes of faith the mercy and saving grace You show to me each day. Thank You for looking at me with loving eyes that save me, a poor miserable sinner, from certain death. Uplift me for the day ahead and reveal to me how I may show others Your wondrous eyes that save. Amen.
