And the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand.” – Joshua 6:2
Joshua was considered a mighty warrior by the people of Israel, by the men he commanded, and by the enemies who feared him. But what was the source of his might? On his own, Joshua was just one man, incapable of conquering the cities in the Promised Land to which he had helped lead the Israelites. In fact, earlier in his life, he was called Hosea, meaning “salvation.” Moses later changed his name to Joshua, meaning “The Lord saves,” or “The Lord gives victory.”
Indeed, we see in today’s verse that God tells Joshua as much. “I have delivered Jericho into your hands.” And in a most unusual way. Using a prostitute who protected Israel’s spies and a band of armed men and priests who marched around the city’s walls every day for a week, Joshua was truly given the victory. How else but by the grace of God did Jericho’s fortifications crumble with footsteps and blaring trumpets?
We may face different challenges than Joshua did. Family strife. Serious health concerns. Job loss. Persecution for our faith. Alone, our efforts are inadequate to overcome them. But in His Word, God reminds us that in all circumstances, He is with us, leading the fight, securing the victory. Let the trumpets sound!
Prayer: Lord, as You led Joshua and his army into Jericho, protected them in battle, and secured their place in the Promised Land, we humbly ask for Your leadership in all areas of our lives. Especially in times when we feel inadequate, renew our strength and direct our steps. And may all the glory of our victories be Yours.
