If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
–Psalm 139:8-10
Hide and Seek – the fun-filled children’s game that we have all played at one time or another. I remember my oldest daughter, when she was 2 or 3, playing hide and seek with her Grandpa. She would hide and as soon as Grandpa came looking for her she would jump out and yell, “Don’t worry Grandpa, I’m right here!” She didn’t give Grandpa time to look for her. She wanted to be found. She didn’t want to be hidden from Grandpa.
Do we want to be hidden from God? Sometimes, I have to admit, I have wanted to hide from God or at least hide what I have done. As sinful people we may want to run and hide from God. We may think if we don’t talk about our sin or try to pretend that what we have done is maybe not all that bad, that God will not really see our sin. Or, we may think, “How can God ever love me after what I have done?”
But, look at what the Psalmist says, “Where can I go from your Spirit?” In heaven, in the depths, on the far side of the sea, even in the darkness, He is there.
What a blessing to know that even when we think it can’t be possible, God will not be hidden from us. He jumps up and says, “Don’t worry; I’m right here!”
Prayer: What a blessing Lord to know that you are always with us, always here, never hiding, to know You love us so much that you sent Your Son Jesus to die for the sins we want to hide from You. During this time of Lent, continue to remind us of Your loving presence. Amen.
