After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” – Genesis 15:1
In our present age, we all deal with a lot of uncertainty – about the economy, about the government, about our health, about our job. Nothing in this life is very sure, is it? Living in a senior community, it is obvious that nothing is very certain.
Abram (whose name was later changed to Abraham) had the same problem. God had made promises to him about his future, but he couldn’t see it, and he was unsure whether God would remain true to his word. God promised to be his “shield” and “very great reward,” but he wondered how any of this could happen as long as he had no male heir. And even when God promised a son, it took so long to fulfill that promise that Abram got impatient and took matters into his own hands by having a child with a servant named Hagar.
When God promises that He will be with us always and that He will never leave nor forsake us, we can’t always be sure that it is true, with our own natural feelings. But when the uncertainty is past and we see God in action, we know that His Word is true and can be depended upon. Let God be God and act at just the right time and place. He is a Father who knows best.
Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, help us to always trust in Your word when things in our life seem very uncertain and precarious. May we always know and believe that You know best.
