And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. – Matthew 26:27-28
Imagine tomorrow is an event that will determine whether or not you have fulfilled your entire purpose in life. Now add to that pressure the reality that in order to be successful in your task, you will need to suffer terrible embarrassment, humiliating shame, excruciating pain, and even death itself! And this is not a possibility – it is a certainty for your goal to be complete.
I asked you to imagine, but it is nearly unfathomable for us to consider all of the pressure Jesus must have been under on the Holy Thursday before his death. I have been nervous about an awkward or difficult conversation that I know will happen the next day. I have lost sleep over worry about a potential coming storm. I have been faint of heart over a minor injury or illness.
Holy Thursday must have been the day of Jesus’ life that required the most courage. Perhaps this is why he spends so much time around the people he loved that day – his disciples. Perhaps this is why he spends so much time in prayer after their meal was complete.
But the best part about seeing the courage of Jesus in His final hours is considering His focus during the meal. His concern is for His disciples, washing their feet and teaching them servant leadership. His concern is for the Church, instituting Holy Communion for the forgiveness of sins. His concern is for you and me, praying for all who would follow Him.
In our moments of weakness and fear, we trust in Jesus, who has carried our sorrows. Because of His courage, we can pour ourselves into the world around us as well. May we do so on this holiest of weekends, and in our daily lives forever.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give us the courage to follow You, knowing that You have suffered all in our place.
