Jairus-Desperate for life

But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
– Mark 5:36

Two years ago, my husband had a necessary back surgery with the physician’s confidence that he would be much improved after the procedure. Unfortunately, this was not the case and he was paralyzed from the waist down when the surgeon damaged his spinal cord. We were devastated with this news! The first few days and weeks were a blur getting treatment for him and realizing how much our lives would have to change with this unexpected handicap.

Although this doesn’t compare to the death of Jairus’ daughter, it still felt like a death of our independence that we used to enjoy. Jesus said to Jairus’ daughter “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” Immediately the little girl stood up and walked around. What a miracle this was! This is my prayer every day for my husband, and even though he works very hard to gain mobility, we know that walking again might not happen in his lifetime without a miracle.

Yes, we have really struggled with this situation and even asked God, “Why me?” After many sleepless nights and prayers for strength we have accepted God’s plan for us and find comfort in Mark 5:36 – “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” We truly do believe in God and have grown even stronger in our marriage and Christian faith. No matter what happens, always believe!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the strength that comes from our belief in You. Help us not to be afraid when bad things happen. Let us share our belief with others so that they too can find comfort in You when they are afraid.
