And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
– 2 Kings 2:2
One of the things I really enjoy about my job is the chance to mentor high school students. I work with special ed students in the Transitional Internship Program at Parkview High School. The students in this program work in nearby businesses, learning job skills and potentially working somewhere that could hire them. Along the way, I get to guide them through everyday situations that they may face once they join the workforce. Things such as filling out an application, creating a resume, how to perform in a job interview and life skills that will serve them well in their future careers.
Elijah had mentored and trained Elisha for many years. So much so that just before Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind, Elisha asked and received a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit. Just as Elijah gave Elisha his all, God gave us His all. He gave us His Son. Jesus was sent into the world to redeem us to God. He, like a mentor, is there for us. In a way, He is a super mentor because He is always there for us. With Him we are never alone. He took away our sin and lives in us and with us. He is just a prayer away.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
– Psalm 34:3
